Egg decorating

Egg decorated bee, ladybird and humpty dumptyOne of the biggest traditional easter activities to do, has got to be egg decorating. It’s such a fun creative activity for children (and adults), I want to make sure we do this every year.

This week BB had an egg decorating competition at school, so at the weekend, we got decorating. Here’s what we got up to……

Blowing the eggs

  1. Make a small hole in each end of the egg, about the size of a pin head.
  2. Poke the pin into the egg and prod it around a bit to break the yoke up inside.
  3. Over a bowl, blow through the egg, trying to blow its contents out the other end.

If it is too difficult, you may need to try widening the holes.

I thought my 4yr olds would not be able to do this, or would crush the egg in their hand, but they managed brilliantly. They all and loads of fun. It was absolutely hilarious watching their ‘egg blowing faces’!! Then when the contents started shooting out the bottom, the squeals of delight was fantastic!Egg blowingegg blowing

Once the eggs were blown and empty, I washed them and blew water through, to stop them smelling!

Egg painting

When the eggs were dry, it was time to decorate.

You can decorate eggs however you like. You could paint or draw lots of patterns on them, stick tissue paper or stickers all over them. My children decided they wanted to make a bee, a ladybird, a humpty dumpty, a Rapunzel and Belle! Well the Rapunzel and Belle did not go well at all, but the others look great!

First of all, I would recommend finding some thin wire to thread through the egg so it can rest on the egg box without touching it.Egg balancing on threaded wireNext, we painted a base coat on each egg, yellow for the bee, red for the ladybird and pink for Humpty Dumpty. Egg painting

This first coat was left to dry before attempting to add the details.

Once dry, BB tried to paint Humpty Dumptys trousers, but the paint was not taking very well. Every time paint was brushed on, it seemed to take the base coat off.  After this frustration, we discovered the best thing to use, was permanent markers and draw on the rest of the details, the black stripes for the bee, the ladybirds dots etc. Egg decorating, drawing

BB also made a wall for Humpty Dumpty, stuck pipe cleaners on for the bees antenna and Humpty’s arms and legs. He stuck googly eyes on too, as I think they always make creations look good!

What do you think????

Everyone loved making their eggs. It took us the whole weekend to make them, as we had to keep leaving things to dry, so if you are having a go, make sure you have plenty of time.
