We started improving our garden last year, when we removed the slippery messy decking and replaced it with a nice patio, as well as building a new shed.
This year we have continued our garden project, by sorting out the grass and adding a new border, in order to soften the look of the fence and bring some nice plants into the garden. We are not at all green fingered and wouldn’t have a clue what plants to choose for our north facing garden. Hence, we decided to use www.gardenonaroll.co.uk. You choose your style depending on the type of garden you have i.e. sunny or shady and what type of plants, e.g. ever green, mixed border, low maintenance etc. You measure the area, then order your plants.
The plants arrive in a box, with them all in alphabetically labelled pots. Also, you get a plan which you lay out on your prepared border and plant the corresponding plant into the letter on the plan. This ensures the plants are correctly spaced for their growth, height and design. For us clueless gardeners, this was a fantastic idea!
Our plants arrived on Thursday and we were very excited.
First thing the next morning we were outside preparing the border. Pinky and Boo couldn’t wait to get stuck in too.
We took the plants out of the boxes and the children helped line them all up in alphabetical order. This was good educational fun.
We laid the plans out on our new border and pegged them down.
The children had a great time searching for and bringing us the letters for the corresponding position. It was a fantastic alphabet learning activity. It really brought letters to life in a fun way.
Pinky and Boo also loved adding a little compost into each hole for the plants.
Each plant was planted in its correct letter positioning. It was just like planting by letters, So easy!
Once all the plants were in, we covered the paper with compost and watered. Voila……all done!

Once the planting was all done, Pinky and Boo collected up all the plant pots and plant labels and started counting them and placing them in order. They were enjoying this activity for ages, they counted them several times over! It is amazing how much learning can be done outside, just doing some gardening.
I would definitely recommend Garden on a roll, it is so easy, fun for children and produces a great result!
