A muddy bike ride

A muddy bike ride

Girls riding their bikesIt is so important to get children outside in the fresh air, running around, burning off energy and exploring their world. At christmas time, we tend to spend a lot of time indoors without realising it and the weather has been pretty bad lately, to make our incentive for getting out even worse.

When the sun shone at the weekend for the first time in ages, knowing that the rest of the week has potential to be rather wet, we grabbed the opportunity with both hands to get out. I wanted to try somewhere different, where the children could all take their bikes, which means….no roads or lakes etc.

We went to Snelsmore common, for the first time, as friends have told me it’s a great place for children to learn to ride bikes. The ground was very very wet, but that didn’t matter. It was a beautiful place, with woodland and a great path circling through, just perfect for little ones riding bikes. The sun was shining, it was cold and fresh, just the way I love a good walk!

Cycling in the woods

The children loved riding through the woods and getting off, exploring the puddles. BB found lots of ice in the puddles too, which gave an interesting twist to his exploration.

BB even went a bit off roading, but I think he’ll be better off waiting until he’s a bit better at riding before tackling off road properly!

Bike riding in woods

Boo, unfortunately took a tumble off her bike straight into a very large deep puddle. Then she just sat in it whining!! Why do children do that?? Why do they not just get up out of the wet? Luckily, once she had got over the shock she was fine, very wet and very muddy, but didn’t complain at all. I was really impressed.

After completing a circuit of the woods, we all sat down and had a hot chocolate I brought to warm up. It was a lovely afternoon, in a beautiful setting on a gorgeous day. The children were all very wet and muddy, but nothing my washing machine won’t cure. We will definitely be returning for more exploration and I am hoping some tree climbing soon.

    • It was a really lovely afternoon :)

  1. That does look fun, but don’t envy you the washing. The ground is so wet at the moment isn’t it?

    • It was a lot of fun, but you’re right, my washing machine is paying for it ;)

  2. What a great family afternoon of fun! The children must have been in their element on their bikes and playing in the puddles. Thanks for linking up and sharing their fun with Country Kids.

    • They definitely were, I think bikes and puddles are the best things for kids :)

    • It is, it’s flat, has a relatively good path and no roads! We loved it :)

    • Oh yes! Though, not sure my washing machine would agree?! :)

    • They were very big puddles!!

  3. Looks great fun wish we could have been there

  4. Fabulous post – sounds like you all had the best time. Good luck with the mud! Just love being outdoors, we had a gap in the rain today so we raced out of the house at break neck speed!

    • Outdoor play is the best!

  5. Have to say the red wellies look a great contrast to the dull background. My 6 year old especially loves his bike and we are actually partial to mud.

Thank you for linking up with Motivational Monday

    • Yeah, bikes and mud = great combination for kids :)

  6. I love Snelsmore Common – we often pop by for a walk if we’re visiting Newbury. It helps having the paths as it does get quite wet there!

    • Snelsmore common is really lovely, we definitely need to visit more

    • Thank you :)
