Clean goop

Clean goop

Clean goop funSince the start of this term BB has been going to a science club after school once a week, which is run by Mad science. Last week he came running out, very excited, showing me the  slime he made. He couldn’t wait to get home to show his sisters.

Each week he also brings home a slip of paper with suggestions for experiments we can try at home. This week, it was clean goop. As he was so taken with his slime I thought we should have a try of the clean goop. Here’s what we did…….

Clean goop

You will need:

  • White toilet paper
  • Bar of ivory soap
  • Warm water
  • Mixing bowl
  • Big spoon
  • Cheese grater
  • Resealable bag

Clean goop ingredientsFirst of all, we tore bits of toilet paper up and put it in the bowl. This is a good fine motor skill activity too.making clean goop with toilet paper

Next, we grated the bar of soap into the bowl. Making clean goop grating soap

Once the toilet paper and soap was in the bowl, we started adding warm water, slowly whilst mixing, as we weren’t sure how much we needed. We added water until the mixture felt thick and foamy.Mixing ingredients to make clean goop

There you have it……..clean goop to play with!Fun play with clean goop

It makes a kind of foamy goop, which smells lovely and clean! The children were rather fascinated with the texture. They spent ages just feeling it, squishing it between their hands and looking at it.

Next, they decided to play with it on the table. They loved spreading it out all over and experimenting with what it could do. They wrote their names in it, drew faces and shapes and generally had a fab messy play session. The bonus of this was….I had a lovely fresh smelling clean table-cloth after!! This has got to be the least stressful  and cleanest messy play I have done!

Once they had finished playing, we scraped up as much as we could off the table and placed it in a resealable bag. This will now last for two weeks. However, we actually enjoyed playing with it in the bag. It was yet another texture.

We spent some time writing in it in the bag, another good, fun way to teach letters, numbers and writing.Writing with clean goop

The children absolutely loved making the goop. It reminded me of when I was a child and made concoctions. The looks on their faces were wonderful when it started turning into foam. Science is great for children. We were even given an explanation for the reason for this foamy reaction, but my children were a little young to understand that yet.

  1. I love this! And I love seeing the excited concentration on your kids’ faces, too. Now, am I brave enough to create the messy goop…?!

    • Ooh yes! It’s the best messy play ever! My table cloth was sparkling clean and very fresh smelling for ages after!

  2. Oooh what a great idea, and you could make different colours too.

    • Yes, different colours sounds good :)

  3. This looks brilliant! Still looks very messy to me, but like you say, at least its clean mess if it’s made with soap! Fantastic stuff. Thanks so much for linking to #creativechallenge xx

    • It is still messy, but this time it really didn’t bother me as it was all so clean x

    • The toilet paper all dissolved and it basically turned into a foam!

  4. I’ve only just heard about this Mad Science thing-my daughters friend had a themed birthday party around it. Great ideas, although I’m pretty sure my two have already created their own gloop during bath times-I should have copyrighted their ‘recipe’!

    • Hehe! Yes, I think kids do make their own goop, but at least this is in a very controlled set up.

  5. Oh this looks fab! You’ve inspired me to try some for messy play at home. I normally avoid it at home as the thought of it gives me a minor heart attack after the ‘let’s eat all the uncooked lentils and shaving foam’ incident ;)

PS the eating bit was them not me.

    • Oh give it a go! It’s good CLEAN fun and if they eat it….they won’t like it! :)

  6. Ooo, I’ve read about this befriend, but haven’t tried it! My 4yo would love this :) #CreativeChallenge

    • Give it a go its so much fun :)

  7. clean mess! The best oxymoron I’ve ever heard. I may even try it.

    • It definitely was fun!

    • Oh do. Let me know how you get on

  8. Great idea. I love the writing for older kids too. Your not away from being able to harness your kids passion for this craft to make your own washing powder. Minus the toilet paper the creation is very similar- I have the recipe on my blog.

    • Ooh, I must have a look!

    • Give it a go, let me know how you get on :)

  9. Interesting! Not seen this idea before – like the idea of colours too! #PoCoLo

    • Yes, I think colour would be a good twist on it :)

  10. That looks like great fun! Glad it is not in my house though ;) I don’t think I would be able to cope!! Thank you for linking to PoCoLo x

    • But it’s very clean. I think my kitchen ended up cleaner than it started! :)

  11. Grace says: Oh wow! This looks awesome – I am SO going to get my Mum to do this – she wouldn’t mind about the mess! Thank you for linking to Mini Creations :)

    • Give t a go……it IS CLEAN mess ;)

  12. Lucas says – WOW OH WOW!!!! I am so going to be showing this to Nanny for me to play with Baby Ace (my cousin) when we both go over on a Tuesday. This looks totally cool…….
    Thanks for linking to #minicreations

    • Oh, go for it! Loads of fun, hope you enjoy it!

    • It’s great fun shaving foam! :)

  13. My girls both went to Mad Science. They came home with fab ideas. I was lucky enough to join in one term, which was fun. Needless to say, science is popular in our house.

    • Fantastic! BB has certainly taken to it. :)

    • Definitely, science is such a hands on fun activity
