Conker hunting

Conker hunting

conker huntingHands up who loves conkers?

Meee! I love conkers. I have some really great childhood memories of hunting for and playing with conkers. I remember every year, going to my nans house for my dads birthday and going to the park, which had a path lined completely with conker trees! It was fantastic! Childs heaven. We would collect whatever conkers we could find on the ground and if we found one in its shell, we loved it. My brother and I would get a bit competitive over who got the best and biggest conkers though, but that’s all part of learning about life.

We would have loads of fun at the park collecting these conkers, then take them home to play with. We drilled holes in them, threaded the string through and try to bash each others conkers until they broke. Unfortunately, I think my brother won more than me (but I’m not bitter about it??!!). We used to try to find ways of making the conkers stronger, like soaking them in vinegar and things I can’t remember any more.It was such good basic fun with nature.

I wanted my children to experience this as part of their growing up, but I was really struggling to find a conker tree, until last weekend. I realised, we have been driving right past one a couple of streets away all this time! So, whilst there was a gap in the rain, we quickly got out the scooters and bike and went round to the tree.

The children were really excited. They loved finding the conkers on the floor and seeing if they could find one in its shell still. We did manage to find two still in their shell. I wanted them to see how the conkers are inside. They were loving comparing all the different sizes and shapes. They haven’t realised about being competitive yet, I’m sure that will come later.

The children had lots of fun collecting their conkers and we now have a big bag full of them, which we are going to have a play with and do some crafts. I will let you know how we get on.

  1. Oh I love conkers! Playing with conkers was a huge part of my childhood. We don’t have conkers in Canada :(

    • Oh no, conkers are such a great childhood thing, don’t think I’d be allowed to send them :(

      • Unfortunately not :( One year our family visited the UK during conker season. My middle son was fascinated with them and wanted to fill his suitcase with conkers. He was heartbroken when I explained that he wouldn’t be allowed to bring them into the country.

  2. Ooh well done! We’ve been sadly disappointed by the conker crop this year – think we’ve collected about 15 in total! Very sad! Glad you had a more successful trip! #SavouringtheSeason

    • Oh no. We did manage to get lots of conkers, but it has taken me several weeks to find a conker tree! :)

  3. Love this. At first I thought the helmets were for protection from the conkers! It was so nice to see them at my school this year where the children were encouraged to play conkers. Lovely pics :)

  4. We have had a few conker hunts this year, but like you, I’ve found finding the trees a real challenge!

  5. love conkers too! I was looking everywhere for a conker tree as well and eventually found loads while we were on holiday so we now have a big basketful, as my brother says, it’s like being rich!

    • Yeah, conkers are great! :)

  6. Hands up for sure, we love conker hunting in our house, partially because I was born in South Africa and we didn’t have conker trees so I may love it more than my little one haha :) Great post

    • I can’t imagine not having co mer trees. Need to make up for lost time then ;)

  7. I have to admit that not having grown up with conkers that I haven’t taken the boys in search of them, although have watched many doing their search. I am going to have to add this to next year’s Autumnal fun – popping over from Country Kids

    • Oh yes, give it a go next year, conkers are great, there is so much that can be had with conkers

  8. As you say conkers are a part of childhood and great that we can pass this onto our children. I’m sure they had a great time hunting and collecting them, thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.

    • My children had lots of fun :)

  9. My brother used to be so competitive with his conkers, painting them with clear nail varnish storing them until next year so they would harden.

    • Ooh, that’s cheating! I remember my brother trying things like that!

  10. Did you know that ‘conkers’ are a natural spider deterrant? Put a hole in in and place a few on window sills, etc……- spiders will find another place to live!

    • Didn’t know that
