Fun egg box letter and word games
Last week BB came home from school with a very random creation from a large egg box! After telling him how creative it was, I was about to throw it away (no, I’m not that wicked, there really was nothing in this so-called creation), but instead, I thought “what can we make from this?”
My 4yr old girls are still struggling with their letters, so I wanted to make a fun letter game. I created these two games, one for my 4yr olds who are learning their letters and one for my 6 yr old who is learning words/spelling. This is what I did……
You need:
- Large egg box
- Pen
- Pennies
Write each letter of the alphabet in each hole of the egg box, then you’re all ready to play.
How to play egg box letter game
- Place the pennies (I used 8) in front of the children. The first child throws a penny into the egg box.
- That child has to say what letter the penny has landed in, correctly.
- If they get it correct, they keep the penny, if they get it wrong it goes back in the pile.
- The next child has a go at throwing the penny etc.
- Once all the pennies have been used up, each child counts how many pennies they have. The child with the most is the winner!
Pinky and Boo, loved this game and they keep asking to play it again and again! They are quite evenly matched as the three times they played it today, they won one game each and tied on the last.
This has proven to be a very fun game, with a little competition, teaching them about hand-eye coordination as well as their letters! Definitely a winner.
How to play egg box word game
This can be played with one or more children. They need the above equipment, plus pen and paper
- The child throws each penny into the egg box
- They write down each letter the pennies landed in
- They then have to see how many words they can make out of those letters
It is a very simple game, but BB enjoyed it and I was surprised at how many words he thought of and even some tricky words!
It was certainly a good challenge for children of lots of ages.
I love how one egg box can be used for fun and learning for both of my children’s ages, you just need to get a little creative sometimes!
