Fizzy science
Science is such a fascinating and interesting subject. It sparks imagination, thoughts, creativity and exploration. My son really loves experimenting with things, so we got outside to do a couple of fun science experiments together.
Fizzy science experiment
You need:
- A bottle of fizzy drink
- A packet of sugar coated mints
- A piece of thin card/paper
- A cocktail stick
Roll up a piece of card/paper.
Push the cocktail stick through the side of the tube of rolled up card ( not too tightly).
Place the rolled up card inside the top of the bottle of fizzy drink.
Place the sugar coated mints into the rolled up card.
Being ready to run out of the way, pull the cocktail stick out so that the mints fall into the fizzy drink all at once. Pull out the card.
Run away! (or you might get showered in fizzy drink)!
Watch the chemical reaction!
This was a fantastically fun experiment to try. All of the children were so excited they ran around the garden screaming afterwards.
Once the kids had calmed down again, they were desperate to try something else, so BB ran to his room and dug out an egg challenge he got for christmas last year. It was a kit to test out if you could drop an egg at height without it breaking, by making various cradles for the egg to sit in from straws and a plastic parachute. It was a little above his age, so mummy and daddy had to make the straw frames for the egg to sit in.
BB chose the triangle shape and daddy was in his element making it!
Daddy took the parachute with the egg taped inside upstairs to BB’s bedroom window and with everyone in the garden watching, dropped it. BB was the first to rescue the egg to see if had broken. On inspection, the egg did crack, but didn’t actually fully break, so it was a success!!
All in all it was a fantastically fun afternoon experimenting, discussing why things happen, chemical reaction and physics. The children were so excited and animated with every experiment, it was lovely to see.
There are lots of science kits you can buy from the shops, even the supermarket if you prefer kits. Alternatively there are some great books of simple science experiments for kids. I would highly recommend giving some science a try at home, there is so much and learning to be had and the best part is, we all get to have a go!
