How to make soap monsters
We love getting creative and I especially love it when the children are inspired to create something from their own imagination. BB saw these soap monsters in a book and was desperate to have a go. I thought this would be a great way to inspire the children’s creativity, as well as teach them a little bit of science, so of course we got stuck in!
Soap monsters
You need:
- Bar of soap
- Microwave
- Monster looking accessories
Firstly, place a bar of soap on a plate and put it in the microwave on full power. The length of time you need varies depending on the soap. I did 3 mins. All three children, loved being allowed to use the microwave, key in the numbers (see, educational too) and watch the soap grow.
Once the soap’s expanded and bubbled up due to the moisture in the soap and the heat, carefully take it out and leave it to cool.
When cooled the children are free to decorate. I raided my craft cupboard and laid various bits on the table for them to get creative. The great thing about monsters is, they are totally imaginary, so there are absolutely no restrictions to their creativity.
The children used pipe cleaners, googly eyes and feathers. They also coloured in tips of cotton buds and stuck them in their monsters for spiky bits. They used pom poms in very strange ways.
I loved watching them create their monsters, using the odd shapes the soap made. The concentration on Boo’s face in the picture above is fantastic.
This was such a wonderful creative, cheap, fun, educational activity that sparked loads of imagination and laughs. I would recommend, especially for halloween.

That looks like so much fun! I’ve always wanted to try the soap in the microwave experiment, but I’m afraid the microwave will forever smell like soap, lol!
Lol! It smelt soapy for little bit, but not for long at all

It really is easy and fun, not at all complicated
My microwave gave up a few weeks ago and I’ve not replaced it. I haven’t really missed it until now-my children would love to try this. Maybe I need to go and buy a new microwave?!
It is a good fun creative activity if you do get another microwave
Didnt know you can do that! Amazing! And I can already imagine how clean smelling the microwave will be =) #letkidsbekids
Lol! Yes, the whole room smells very clean for a while
I would be worried it would explode!! looks good though!
Lol! I was a little concerned, but when it was slightly over done it just started burning slightly, rather than exploding, so it was fine as long as we watched it.
