Pets
Most children love pets and are constantly asking mum and dad if they can have a pet. I believe it is important for children to have pets. It teaches them about caring for something, how to look after animals and commitment.
Hubby and I love cats. We had a couple of gorgeous cats before the children came along, but unfortunately we lost them, so we have been without pets for 6 years now. We are not ready for the commitment of cats again yet, but would like to show the children about caring for something, so when our neighbour offered us a fish tank we grabbed the opportunity.
Last weekend, we finally went to the aquatics shop to choose our fish. The children (and daddy) were so excited! We all wandered up and down each row of fish tanks looking at all the amazing beautiful fishes. We spoke to the man in the shop for guidance and settled on some tetra’s. Each child chose 2 tetra’s each, as we only have a very small tank.
We brought them home, followed the instructions for how to settle them into the tank and then finally, the fish were set free in their new home! Yay! The children were delighted watching their fish swim around. They noticed each pair of fish sticking together as they shoal together.
We have drawn up a timetable of when we need to feed the fish (every other day) and when we need to change the water etc. as well as who’s turn it is. I thought that was the only way we would remember which childs turn it is to feed them, as I wanted to avoid arguments!
This is working brilliantly so far. They rush downstairs in the morning saying “is it my turn to feed the fish?”. I love watching them being fascinated by their fish and wanting to take care of them. I just hope the novelty doesn’t wear off!
They have each named their fish: Wallace and Gromit, Topsy and Tim, Harry and Thomas! I thought these names were brilliant!
Hopefully one day we will be ready for a more furry pet, but for now, we are enjoying our new fish, hence our word of the week is ‘pets’.

Glad they’re settling in well

Thanks
We had one aquarium and all fishes died from over feeding..
Rebuilding it is in my to-dos for the year..
Glad that you had a great time. Have a blasting weekend!
Oh no! Hope things work out better this year
Fish are awesome for helping children understand about the responsibility of pets without getting lumbered with walking them every day haha
– love their names! #WoTW
Brilliant names! Love the photos of them all eagerly watching them, too
Thanks for sharing with #WotW x
Aww! How fantastic! I would love some fish but my youngest has a great fascination with water….I don’t think they’d last long….
Oh dear!
I agree, pets are great for children. I love the names

Thank you. I was very imposed with the names they chose!
We don’t have pets either – I’m not really an animal person and I’ve seen other people with dogs or cats just bleed money when it comes to vets fees. I have noticed that my eldest can be very nervous of other peoples’ pets though. My best friend had some goldfish once when we were growing up – they were called TJ Hooker and Romano! (and I’m guessing this will only make sense if you were a child of the 80s!) I’ll have to remind her about that! #WotW
Yeah, pets are not definitely not cheap
I loved our fish when I was a child. Those names are brilliant! Pets are important for children… Maybe one day we will get a pet too.
Thank you
Brilliant fish names! I had a fish at uni called Bob, he lived for 6 years!
I like the name Bob!
Have fun with the fish. We have some too and do enjoy them. Always popular with young visitors too.
Yes, the children become quite mesmerised by them
Rabbits are the next step up from fish!
also makes a great DIY project if you are into that sort of thing building them a run in the garden
May consider rabbits in a while, I do prefer furry
