Bring back childhood

Bring back childhood

bring back childhood, children playingI have started this website/blog with the aim of raising awareness for the need to let our children be children.

We live in a modern fast paced world. There is so much technology on offer, it is no wonder our children like to sit behind a computer screen or in front of the TV. But, how do our children learn most? What provides the most fun for children and the whole family? I don’t believe it is the computer or TV. When they are grown up, will they look back and think, I had a fantastic childhood watching the TV or playing that computer game? I think not.

How often do you see children playing outside these days? Not too often. Where has our children’s childhood gone?

When I think back to my own childhood, I remember family time together, running around outside, riding bikes, climbing, exploring, crafting, playing with friends and generally just having basic fun. This is what I want my children to experience. I want them to look back when they are grown up and remember their childhood filled with fun, laughter and basic play.

Children learn best through play and their own exploration, they need to experience things for themselves, not just be shown it on a screen. They need to have time for independent play as well as parental guided play. This also provides a great opportunity for family time. So much fun can be had playing with your children in a basic way……go jump in some muddy puddles, get painting, get dancing, go make a den, read stories or enjoy some pretend play. You’ll have a whale of a time! And I guarantee, your children will look back at their childhood and love their family time together.

Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a bit of TV or computer, they definitely have their place in this modern world, it does need to be embraced. My children watch some TV just like everyone else, but, everything in moderation and not to the detriment of other things, playing, fun and learning.

Please join me in helping raise awareness of bringing back childhood and letting kids be kids.

  9. Love what you have written – just the sort of childhood we are trying to give our two little ones too :) Have you come across Tim Gill’s blog – rethinkingchildhood.com? Very inspirational and well worth a look. I found myself spurred into action after reading it and (apart from climbing more trees as a family!) I now close my street to through traffic for the children to play out. See playingout.net for another inspirational site on giving children freedom. Fantastic video on the homepage.

    • Thank you, I will take a look :)

  10. I love this post Karen. SO TRUE. Mr P and I are always going on about how kids don’t play OUTSIDE anymore. My streets growing up were full of them including me and my siblings. We use to run home from school to play out until it went dark. My mom always said get outside and play. We didn’t have all these video game consoles and computers to stay in doors staring at a screen all evening. Don’t get me wrong I am guilty of it myself but they have plenty of time to do that when they are adults too. They all need to get OUT and play more. Great post I love this blog what a great idea. Thanks for linking up to Share With Me.

    • Thank you. This is something I really believe in, so this blog is trying to promote it :)

  12. I think its so easy to forget that kids are kids I love this post it reminds me of things I did as a child its such a shame things are the way they are these days #sharewithme

    • Thank you

  13. I really love this, and you are so right – we live in a society with much too much technology to distract kids from fresh air and imaginative play. Love the whole concept behind your blog – I’ll be following for tips!! E x #sharewithme

    • Thank you, it’s something I really believe in :)

  14. When i was younger my afternoon is spent outside playing with cousins and neighbors. Even when its raining. With our weather (always sunny really) its better you stay outside than rot inside with sweat. I try to do that with my son here. I dont know any other mothers and kids but i bring him in all the playgroups. I want him to go out and play with other kids. And on times that it is not possible, we go out (w/ my husband) and play with him.

Play is important to me too and I love how your post says just that. I hope I make some sense.

    • It is difficult theses days for kids to play out on the street, the children are just not around as much

  15. Great post and so very true – we always try to put our gadgets down now and limit ipad time – it started worrying me when z could narrate one episode of Ben and Holly!

    • Thanks, it’s good to start being aware of technology time I think
