Difficult week

Difficult week

Every year christmas brings excited, hyper children, which although is difficult to deal with, is perfectly normal and it is lovely seeing my children happy loving life. Usually the children get over excited long before christmas, but calm down quickly after it’s over. However, this year, they stayed relatively calm until just a few days before. I thought, “fantastic, we’ve done well this year”, oh how wrong I was! They may have been calm for longer before hand, but they have remained high the whole time since then!

This week has been quite fraught and intense trying to manage hyper children and bring them back to reality. There have been several occasions where I have just opened the back door and forced them to go outside to run and scream in the hope they burn it off. At times this has worked, other times it has not.

We went to the pantomime last weekend and had a lovely time, but by the end of the day on the train and bus home, they were very restless and I spent the whole journey home saying “sit down”! Luckily we had a 20 min walk after the train to give them some fresh air and calm down time before bed. It was dark and they were difficult to manage, so I ended up inventing a game to get us home safely (which I will write-up another time) and it worked!

Now we are all back at school, I think the routine is helping bring them back to earth, but slowly. It is very difficult trying to calm children down, without dampening their spirit.

  1. I hope a week of normal to routine has sorted them out lovely. We’ve had major behaviour problems this holiday so you have my sympathy xx

    • Thank you, routine is very slowly bringing them back to earth, but we still have a way to go. I hope you sort you problems out soon too. x

  2. I like the sound of your game to help get them all home safely – looking forward to hearing more about that. Hope things will settle down very soon and the post-Christmas hyper phase will wear off again.

    • Thank you, yes, looking forward to things calming down soon.

  3. I hope that things get back to normal soon!

    Visiting from #wotw x

    • Thank you x

  4. You are right when you say it can be difficult to calm children down without dampening their spirit.
My children have been the same all over Christmas, and I’m still struggling now to get them to sleep at night because they are totally wired, even after a week of normal routine! #WotW

    • It does seem to be taking a long time to calm them all down this year for some reason.

  5. How very true, trying to keep children calm without seeming to dampen their spirits slightly is a tricky one and I’m not sure I manage it terribly well! We’re finding this week a struggle getting back into a routine actually. I hope it settles down for you soon.

    • Thank you, I’m not managing it very well either. I hope things improve for you next week too x

  6. I can relate to your #wotw. Yes, it has been difficult too. My little T struggles to go to school every morning (she doesn’t want to go!), even though I remind her everyday that she actually comes home smiling ;) Personally, I’m also struggling. I don’t like January! #wotw.

    • January can be difficult for everyone I think, I’m sure Little T will realise how much she likes school again soon.

  7. I can very much relate to this! Cameron has calmed down a bit since going back to school! Like you, I also find it hard to do it without it look like I am being mean! I hope you all have a better week next week!

    • It is really difficult when children are not being naughty, but the hyper behaviour is not right either, what do you do? Hopefully they’ll calm down soon and I won’t have to worry about it.

  8. I am in the same situation actually. EVery morning its a challenge to get my son ready. I know that this is a the 1st week and he would go back and hopefully he would go back to normal sooner. Hugs to you. #wotw

    • It is difficult getting things back to normal after christmas isn’t it? Hope things improve for you too soon x

  9. I hope getting them back into their normal routine will do the trick and that they’ll soon settle down.So glad to hear this new game worked, I look forward to reading about it.xx

    • Thanks, I’m keeping my fingers crossed things calm down soon x

  10. My daughter is permanently like this, it seems! I spend a lot of my time asking her to calm down, sit down, stop jumping around and so on, which I hate as it’s all ‘don’t do’ things, but I also know her and the fact that a few moments later either she or her brother will get hurt with their over-zealous ways! She’s been fine going back to school, though, and it has meant she’s been a bit more tired at bedtime. Only a bit, mind! Hope that next week is a lot better for you all x Thanks for sharing with #WotW

    • It is tough isn’t it? I am continuously saying “calm down”! My son does improve when he’s been to school and had some mental stimulation, but, I’m hoping they will all settle down soon. x

  11. Oh dear! It has been a difficult week…..It is hard calming kids down without totally ruining the mood….I do like the sound of your game to help you all home safely!! x

    • I am having to become very inventive ;)

  12. Ah sounds hectic, we are learning it is hard to bring them down to earth after Christmas without dampening their spirit like you say. Monkey is still obsessed with Christmas no matter how much we try and tell him it is over for another year bless him! Hope things settle down for you! Xx #wotw

  13. Sounds very much like my 3, but bugs have brought mine back down to earth with a bump!

Hopefully a week or so back into routine will settle them down just in time for half term.

    Goodluck n best wishes.

  14. I hope things are calmer now they’ve had a few days to get back into the swing of things.

  15. I totally sympathise. Mine were really difficult from 1st December until Xmas morning. Hopefully now they will all settle down a bit x
