A British summer fete
Every year in July we head back to Hertfordshire for the weekend, to help out with my parents village fete. My parents help organise their local fete on the village green. It is always such a hit, the children love it and every year people flock to the green like a real community. I always say it reminds me of ‘The vicar of Dibley’!
This year was no different, we were getting concerned about the weather forecast, but thankfully after a bit of drizzle first thing the sun came out and it stayed dry. My dad and hubby were up at the green at 7am helping to put up gazebos and plan the stalls etc. It is surprising just how much work goes into organising a fete.
I was left bringing the children along a little later to help my mum set up her craft stall, along with hook the ducks and a frog jumping game and of course the kids wanted to help?!
By the time the fete started, we were all ready. My mum had a kids craft stall where children could colour in a fabric pencil-case, bag, bookmark, door hanger or key ring. The kids seemed to enjoy it, I know Pinky and Boo did.
The hook a duck is always a big winner and very popular with children. My kids loved the trampolines, the bouncy castle, the coconut shy and hoopla.
They also made a very simple music shaker.
There was a local bee keeper there which was fantastic for the children to be able to get up close to bees without fear of being stung. BB is rather afraid of bees so I was keen for him to take a look, which he did once he realised they were behind glass. The children were all really fascinated by them and the bee keeper told us all about the queen bee and it’s babies.
There were children’s races to take part in and even a talent show, but I think the high light of our day was the Dolly Parton tribute. She was fantastic. Pinky and Boo loved it. They were sitting on the edge of the arena, but they liked it so much they we had to move inside so we were closer, it was like their first ever concert! The audience joined in and Boo got to have her photo take with Dolly at the end (Pinky was a bit scared to).
It was a wonderful village fete with an amazing atmosphere where everyone had lots of fun in the sunshine. It was hard work, but well worth it.

It looks lovely – even with the slightly scary Dolly Parton!
Lol! it was a great fete
I could just imagine the great community atmosphere and everyone having such a great time with all those wonderful activities and fun entertainment. As you say it’s hard work if you are involved organising the day, but well worth it in the end. Thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.
