Creativity

Creativity

CreativityIn the let kids be kids household, we love creativity, arts and crafts. There is so much fun to be had when exploring, learning and getting creative. My children love organised craft activities, but they also seek out creativity of their own too. They love junk modelling and sticking random things together, then telling me this is ‘………’ , though it never actually looks like what it’s meant to be, but that’s not the important part. The main thing is that they are using their imagination and attempting to create something amazing. It is wonderful!

Last week has been no exception. We did spaghetti art, where I provided the tools they needed to let them explore. I did show them things they could do with it, but ultimately they experimented themselves. They created pictures, mess, explored the textures and learnt about creativity.

We also made up a game of fishy races together, though I admit, this was more organised and did need a lot of help, but it was still creativity.

We visited Nana and Grandad’s last week too. Nana loves crafts, so the children got to decoupage little treasure boxes, make beads and necklaces as well as do lots of colouring and drawing.

When it comes to creativity, there is no right or wrong. Often the best thing to do is provide children with a table of bits and pieces (i.e. paper, pencils, stickers, scissors pom poms, recycled boxes…..etc) and let them loose, see what they come up with. Sometimes it can be fantastic, other times, it’s just pure fun! Whatever the result, there is learning and enjoyment involved….so always a winner!

    • Thanks :)

  1. it’s amazing what kids can come up with… my son found little pieces of old fabric the other day and used sticky tape to make it into a princess mouse shape. Ok, he needed to clarify what it was, or I may not have seen immediately that it was a princess mouse, but I still thought it was pretty amazing ;)

    • That’s fantastic. Not sure what a princess mouse would look like, but that’s not the important part, it’s the process, the fun and the imagination that matters! :)

  2. Fab word and one I love. I’ve been helping my daughter make her costume for World Book Day and really enjoyed it. She’s going as Hiccup and we’ve made a cardboard dagger and shield!

    • Ah, well done, hope she enjoys it!

  3. Love your philosophy – no right or wrong. When I take time to do craft with the children I love it @kateonthinice

    • I think it’s always worth the effort :)

  4. It sounds like you have had a very fun week!!
    Fab week x

    • We have thank you

  5. A great word! We love our creativity, too, and we’ll definitely be trying some of that spaghetti art as I loved that idea – it’s been pinned to remind me! Thanks for sharing with #WotW x

    • Fab! hope you enjoy it :)

  6. We have just invested in an arts and crafts box and filled it with lots of lovely things. We are looking forward to getting creative #WotW

    • Ooh, that sounds fantastic! Hope you enjoy it!

  7. I really shy away from creative stuff with the kids I have to admit. As I work part time I feel a bit like I am either coming or going, taking the kids to playdates or trying to keep the house tidy while they pull out every toy under the sun and sometimes the thought of extra mess in the shape of paint, glue, glitter and small pieces of paper feels a bit too much but I am determined to give it a go very soon because maybe it will actually turn out to be very fun! In the meantime thank goodness for nursery & preschool where they get to do everything from art work to sand play, paints to cardboard boxes, sellotape and glue!

    • Give it a try, while they are busy making craft mess, they are not pulling toys off the shelf, it’s just a different mess. I agree with nursery/preschool though, they can get a good art and craft fix there

    • Thank you x

    • Fab, let us know how you get on x

  8. Love it! We love getting creative too!

    • It’s always good to get creative I think

  9. I agree 100%! They do not necessarily need an end product or too much guidance. My little ones made a hopscotch game out of paper and tape this afternoon and that provided them with hours of fun! Will definitely be trying the spaghetti art with them! x Mel

  10. I totally agree with you about creativity. They don’t have a lot of time at school to allow the children to do their own thing for however long they like. Loved the Montessori system for that. I believe that its part of my role to give my children the room to create at home. I love the ideas they come up with by themselves.

    • It can be fascinating watching a child create something from nothing, then I usually spend ages trying to work out what it is (without offending them!).
