In search of traditional childhood fun in a modern world

A lovely disaster

I love seeing my children outside, running around, getting plenty of fresh air and exercise. I believe it is very important, especially at this time of year. To be honest, that’s probably what my children love to do most themselves. However, in the winter, it can easily get forgotten and avoided. It’s cold outside, damp in the air, it’s a struggle to get wrapped up, with coats, hats, gloves on. So when I read a post from The Reading Residence on my Let kids be kids linky, about making a table centrepiece, I thought, that’s a perfect excuse for us all to get out.

So, yesterday we went off for a walk around our local lake to see what foliage and ‘treasure’ we could find to make a table centrepiece. Unfortunately, there was very little in the way of pretty winter foliage, like holly and pinecones etc, so we ended up just enjoying the walk, the ducks and the looking and hoping we would find things.

We found some berries, but that’s about all. We will just have to try again somewhere else.

However, just because we didn’t manage to achieve what we set out, does not mean it was a disaster. We made different fun. We looked at and talked to the ducks. My girls spent ages standing there quacking at the ducks, with the ducks quacking back, I have no idea what either side was saying?!

They spent time splashing in their wellies in the lake.

They balanced around some beams.

They played in the playground and then made a competition for themselves, who could jump best for a photograph……here’s the results.

It was a lovely walk with my two girls, we all enjoyed it, we all got lots of exercise and fresh air and at the end of it, I felt like we achieved something, even though it wasn’t what we set out for. Sometimes, the best things catch us by surprise. I like to grab every opportunity that comes our way and make the most of it, especially when it’s free and healthy. It was a lovely disaster.
