Monster games for fun and learning

Monster games for fun and learning

I suggested to my son that we could make up a monster game, he leapt at the idea as he always enjoys inventing new games. He grabbed pen and paper and wrote down his game. He then stood up and read out the instructions to everyone.

This is the game BB made up…..

What’s for lunch Mr Monster?

Yes, you guessed it, this game is based around the game What’s the time Mr Wolf, only with a monster theme. What's for lunch Mr Monster game

  • 1 child is the monster and stands 1 end of the room
  • The other children line up the other side of the room.
  • The children call out “What’s for lunch Mr Monster?”
  • The monster turns round and says a number and food, i.e. 2 apples.
  • The children then take 2 monster steps forward.
  • They call out again “What’s for lunch Mr Monster?”
  • The monster again says a number and food i.e 3 worms. Yes, they’re monsters so it needs to be monster food, not necessarily our food. Get the children to be imaginative and it can make them laugh and giggle quite a bit too!
  • The children take that many monster steps forward and this goes on until the monster replies to the question “YOU!”
  • Then all the children have to run away and the monster catches someone who then becomes the monster.Playing what's for lunch mr monster?

My kids loved playing this game, it was fun, imaginative and helped the younger ones with counting. As we had a friend round to play, it was good having more children playing it. I must admit it would have been even better played outside , but it rained all day, so we couldn’t get out. However, it was a popular game, so I think we will be trying it out outside soon.

I do love the way BB made the game up himself, it was very creative of him and it inspired him to practice his writing too. Why not suggest a theme to your children and see what game they can come up with?

Musical monster letters

The second game we played involved music as all kids love dancing around, letters as I wanted to help my children learn their letters better and monsters to increase the fun.

I stuck letters on some card. Then I stuck monster pictures on some card and scattered them around the room face down.

To play musical monster letters

  • The children dance around to the music. When the music stops they have to stand on a card.
  • The children then turn over their card one at a time.
  • The younger ones have to say the letter and a word that begins with that letter.
  • The older children have to say the letter and a whole sentence that starts with that letter.
  • If the children get it correct, they get a point.
  • However, if a child turns over a monster card, they have to miss a turn.
  • The first child to collect 10 points wins!Musical monster letter game fun

This is similar to the musical letters game which my children love, so this was a great twist to a game I know is always popular.

The kids get to dance, exercise, learn letters and sentences, play and have fun. It is also a bit of a memory game, as the children want to avoid turning over the monsters.

This was a really good fun thing to do with the children. They invented their own game, they had fun, they did some learning they didn’t even realise they were doing and they were creative. I must admit, I think this was a success!
