An alien adventure

When I heard about Barny’s Winter Little Adventures Linky Challenge, I thought it sounded like a fantastic idea to get the children outside, using their own imagination for fun, fresh air and exercise. Here is what we got up to…..

I told the children we were going on an adventure and it could be any adventure they liked, they just had to use their imagination.

They skipped around the house excitedly, looking for things to pack for their adventure. They got their rucksack’s and packed the most important thing first….Barny (of course!), their delicious snack and a flask of hot chocolate, followed by a notepad and pencil to make notes, a camera, binoculars and a pot and bag for collecting treasures/findings. Wellies and rain coats at the ready, we were all set to enter a world of imagination!Little explorers bags with all they'd need for an adventure

Greenham Common is only 5 mins from us, but we have never been, so this was the perfect place for the children to have an adventure. Just as we pulled into the car park, the heavens opened! However, never let it be said we give up just because of a bit of rain. We wrapped up and went anyway!

At first, we entered into an eerie wooded area. Big Brother was brave and went first ,checking things out for his sisters.Children entering woods for an alien adventure

Once they were in the wooded area, they all had a good scout around to see what they could find. They found some prints in the mud. They stopped to have quite a discussion between them on what the prints might be from and decided they were probably alien footprints!Children finding footprints on an alien adventure

The children wandered round, looking behind bushes, under stones and round trees for more clues and alien trails. BB loved using his binoculars to see if he could spot some aliens.

They decided they needed to venture out into the clearing to see what was there. There were lots of mounds dotted around for them to climb. It gave them a good view to see much further  with the binoculars.

Once they were able to have a good exploration of the area, they decided, the mounds were actually spaceships which had been buried in the ground for disguise and the prickly bushes were aliens in disguise. The thin sticks/plants poking out of the water, apparently were skinny aliens! Children pretending to spot aliens

I loved watching the children run around, climb, explore, investigate and use their imagination to come up with a whole new world of adventures. Nothing we see is what it seems….everything is something else, when you use your imagination!

All this exploration had given the children an appetite. Luckily we had packed our Barny’s for a snack.Barny snack

We struggled to find a dry spot to have our snack, so ended up huddled in some bushes for shelter, desperately trying to stay dry (failing miserably I might add)! Luckily, I had brought two black sacks for us to sit on.

The children were very excited about their Barny snack, we had not tried them before. They got them out and enjoyed showing their bear (Barny) the aliens, before munching into them. The children loved them. I found them to be a great snack to take on a little adventure, they were a bear shaped sponge individually wrapped, with a delicious chocolate centre, which meant ‘mess free fingers’ (always a bonus)!Eating a Barny snack

We all enjoyed our hot chocolate and sit down (even in the rain) before packing up our things again. I picked up the black sacks and had to shake off the excess water, unfortunately shaking it all over me! The children found this hysterical, they said it was alien wee! Well, that’s my children’s imagination for you?!

We were quite wet by this stage, so we started heading back to the car. The children were all in search of alien treasures on the way back. BB found an alien feather, the girls found some stones, which apparently were alien poo (why are children so fascinated with excrement?) and everyone collected some sticks which were the aliens food left overs!Finding alien treasures

We had the most amazing, fun, lighthearted morning, exploring a beautiful environment (even in the rain), in a childs imaginary world! An alien theme may not be your normal adventure to go on, but I wanted the children to use their own imagination, not mine. It is fascinating, observing what can spark a child’s imagination!
