Fish – #WoTW

For us, this week, has had a large focus of ‘fish’.Fish

Last weekend we were very lucky to be given a fish tank from a neighbour who is moving. We don’t have any pets. Hubby and I used to have cats, but unfortunately we lost them before the children came along. We don’t feel ready for the commitment of cats again yet, but we would like to show and teach the kids about looking after an animal. Therefore, when our neighbour kindly offered us the chance of having fish, we thought it would be a good way to introduce pets into the family.

We took a trip to our local aquatics shop. The children got very excited looking at all the fish. There are so many bright, colourful fish and some very weird-looking fish too come to that! The children are getting ideas of what fish they would like. We asked in the shop all the information we needed and bought the extra bits like sand etc.

Back at home, we cleaned the tank, filled it with the sand and water, plugged it in and have been letting it settle ever since. We have been monitoring the temperature each day, waiting for it to get up to 24 degrees. I think it is just about ready now.

The children are so excited and can’t wait to go back to the shop to choose our fish. I think hubby and I are also rather excited. I am looking forward to teaching the children about looking after a pet, feeding them, ensuring the water/environment is correct. I believe it is an important lesson for kids learn, to take care of something.

This week, we also made up a game of fishy races which I will write about shortly. Hence, our word of the week is ‘fish’.
